Biography

Marty J. Jackley was sworn in as the 30th Attorney General for the State of South Dakota, serving as the chief law enforcement officer and legal advisor for the State. Marty and his wife Angela live in Pierre with their two children, Michael and Isabella.
Marty graduated from South Dakota School of Mines and Technology with his Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering with Honors. He received his law degree from the University of South Dakota School of Law, and then served as a law clerk for then-Chief Judge Richard H. Battey in federal district court in Rapid City. Marty joined the Rapid City law firm of Gunderson, Palmer, Nelson, and Ashmore LLP. As a partner, his practice areas focused primarily on criminal law, civil and business litigation. At this time he also served as a Special Assistant Attorney General for South Dakota prosecuting primarily controlled substance felonies.
In 2006, Marty was appointed and unanimously confirmed by the US Senate as United States Attorney for the District of South Dakota. While United States Attorney he served on both the US Attorney General’s Subcommittees for Controlled Substances and the Subcommittees for Native American Issues, and the Midwest High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Executive Board. In 2008, Marty was the recipient of the South Dakota Prosecutor of the Year Award.
In November 2010, Marty was elected by 67% of the vote. He presently serves as the Co-Chair of the National Association of Attorneys General Tobacco Committee, Criminal law Committee, as well as Vice Chairman of the Conference of Western Attorneys General.
Marty’s extensive litigation and appellate experience includes the prosecution of John Graham for the first degree murder of Anna Mae Aquash, and the Berget and Robert death penalty trials for the first degree murder of Senior Corrections Officer Ron Johnson
