Quick Facts

Alabama (District: 6)

starts 01/04/1993

Congressman Spencer Bachus serves the Sixth District of Alabama in the U.S. House of Representatives, where he is recognized as a conservative leader who supports fiscal responsibility, free enterprise, a strong national defense, and traditional values. As a result of redistricting effective with the 113th Congress, the Sixth District is comprised of all or parts of Jefferson, Shelby, Chilton, Coosa, Bibb, and Blount counties.

Bachus earlier served in the State Senate where, prior to his election, no Republican had been elected to the body since Reconstruction. He wrote the first law in Alabama penalizing repeat DUI offenders, authored state domestic abuse statutes, and received the Legislator of the Year Award from the Department of Human Resources. Bachus was also the first Republican elected to the State School Board.

In the U.S. House, Congressman Bachus works to promote jobs and opportunity for the Sixth District and Alabama. Recognizing the importance of a modern transportation system to economic development, Bachus has advocated for major projects including the development of Corridor X and the Northern Beltline and helped increase the percentage of federal gas tax dollars returned to Alabama for road improvements. Congressman Bachus played a prominent role in locating the National Computer Forensics Institute in Hoover to combat cybercrime and wrote the law establishing the Cahaba River National Wildlife Refuge to protect Alabama’s longest free-flowing river and promote eco-tourism. A proponent of tornado safety, Bachus authored a law permitting federal block grant funds to be used for storm shelter construction. To properly honor the service of veterans, Bachus worked to authorize the construction of the Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo.

On the House Financial Services Committee, Congressman Bachus has provided leadership during the most challenging times faced by the U.S. financial system since the 1930s. He was chosen by his colleagues to serve as Committee Chairman during the 112th Congress, becoming the first Alabamian to head the panel in more than 70 years. Bipartisan laws enacted during his chairmanship include the Jumpstart Our Business Startups (JOBS) Act, export promotion authority renewal, and flood insurance reform.

Other notable committee achievements by Congressman Bachus include the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions (FACT) Act, which contains powerful identity theft protections and entitles consumers to a free copy of their credit report; deposit insurance reform; modernization of the check clearing process; and the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA), which culminated a long campaign to protect young people and families from illegal offshore casino gaming sites.

In the 113th Congress, Bachus is serving on the Financial Services Committee as Chairman Emeritus and has rejoined the Judiciary Committee as Chairman of the Subcommittee on Regulatory Reform, Commercial, and Antitrust Law.

A native of Birmingham, Congressman Bachus graduated from Auburn University and the University of Alabama School of Law. He and his wife Linda live in Vestavia Hills. They are the parents of five children and have seven grandchildren, and attend Hunter Street Baptist Church.
